Our reading program is SFA (Success for All). Teamwork skills are an important component of SFA. Our SFA class meets in Room 4402. We are very lucky to be able to incorporate the use of an ACTIVboard for SFA instruction. The ACTIVboard is an interactive board from Promethean Planet and is used to show part of the story packet, Word Power, enhance background knowledge and to use as a white board using the program's tools. Hopefully, in the near future we can expand our technology use with an iPad.
All SFA students are required to read 20 minutes Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. Twenty minutes of reading over the weekend may substitute for one nightly reading. Research has shown that reading for at least four nights a week for twenty minutes will help increase a student's reading fluency. Fluency is the number of words read in a minute less the total number of word errors. Increased fluency helps the student focus more on comprehension rather than decoding.
Each Friday that our class reads the required total minutes for the week, we post a 100% SFA reading sign on the classroom door showing we reached our goal. The students can earn a party at the end of each quarter when the class has completed 100% of their reading homework every week. Please continue to support your child and initial their Reading Response form every evening, helping the students to earn 100% each week. Students may go to Breakfast Club Tuesday through Friday to read 20 minutes from 7:20-7:40.
One of the library books that your student checks out should be at their reading level. No more than 1-2 words out of approximately 20 words should be difficult to read. This will help to increase their comprehension and fluency. The SFA leveled library books are excellent for the 20 minutes of reading a night. |
